The original is no longer available.įor all intents and purposes, Myst Masterpiece Edition *is* the original version, other than having better graphical compression. Masterpiece has exactly the same renders, at the same resolution, but without the palette compression. The only difference is that the original graphics are compressed down to 8-bit paletted mode, which means they display dithering and color banding. Someone else in this thread posted a zoomed-in comparison shot. ![]() I download on OS X and copy to a disk I put into the USB Zip and then insert into my SCSI zip on any vintage Mac (even as far back as the Plus!) and I go from there.ĭifference between original and masterpiece is quite negligible. I use a Zip drive to transfer stuff I download. Once you have something like a G5 and you’ve got hardware software and operating system experience, move into older Macs much easier. If you have one shipped the cost is high and the chance of getting one that isn’t damaged in shipping is very slim. You can run many apps and games from 1984-2000 under Classic quite easily. From there you can install OS X 10.4.11 and Classic OS 9. The G5 has the luxury of running OS X 10.5, which can run TenFourFox (a browser that can connect to modern sites), and has a CD burner, and uses SATA hard drives. Check reliability reports but the most reliable are the dual core 2.0 and 2.3 models of late 2005. One of the best machines to get your feet wet with can be a G5 aluminum cheesegrater Mac. So while you can get a vintage Mac for under $100, sometimes as low as $30 (or locally some people give them away), the added experience and hardware required will be a lot more of an investment. Either by burning CDs that you read on your older Mac, or using a Zip or Jaz drive, or preparing the SCSI2SD. Often people use a 2000-2010 Mac for internet connectivity and as a bridge. You cannot easily use a Windows machine for most of these things. You will need some form of bridge machine or device to get the Mac working and keep it working. Some people opt for the SCSI2SD board which allows using a SD card for a hard drive. Original hard drives are proving unreliable in 2020. Then there’s loading the OS onto whatever drive you want to use. Between 19 you are on borrowed time for needing a recap. Most machines from prior to 2010 will need a recap, and ones from 1995 and prior definitely do. If you have never used one and want to jump in, you’ll need some prior computing experience, ability to use google really well, and some hardware knowledge and repair ability. There are a lot of issues that plague used Macintosh computers.
